Gradually whisk about 1 cup warm milk mixture into yolks and then whisk egg yolk mixture back into milk mixture. Cook milk mixture over moderate heat, whisking, until it comes to a boil. In a medium bowl whisk together egg yolks. In a heavy medium saucepan whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and salt and gradually whisk in water and milk, whisking until cornstarch is dissolved. Remove paper and rice carefully and bake shell until golden, about 12 minutes more. Line shell with wax paper and fill with rice or pie weights. Prick shell in several places with a fork and chill, covered, 30 minutes. Trim edge of dough, leaving a ½-inch overhang, and crimp edge decoratively. On a lightly floured surface with a floured rolling pin roll out dough into a 13-inch round, (about ⅛-inch thick) and fit into a 9-inch (1-quart) pie plate. This will seal the pie and keep it from losing moisture when you slide it back into the oven to toast the meringue until it’s golden brown. Finally, when you fill the baked pie crust, spread the meringue to the very edges of the pie, so that it touches the crust, before decorating it with pretty swoops and swirls. While the pie crust and lemon filling cool, whip your egg whites with cream of tartar and sugar until stiff peaks form so the meringue holds its signature shape. Then, when you make the lemon filling, be sure to bring the milk mixture to a boil, to activate the cornstarch (which is what will thicken the pudding). While each of the pie’s elements-pie crust, filling, and meringue-is simple, you’ll want to proceed with care to avoid having a soggy crust, a soupy pie filling, or a meringue that “weeps” (releasing beads of water): First, blind-bake your pie shell and let it cool to room temperature, so that it’s nice and crisp. While it has a fairly sharp flavor, the cloudlike meringue topping balances it out, giving you a perfect equilibrium of taste and texture in every bite. The filling is similar to lemon curd, with fresh lemon juice and lemon zest, sugar, egg yolks, and plenty of butter. While citrus fruits like lemons are at their best in winter, this sweet-tart dessert has such a sunny color that it also looks right at home on a summer day. Shape each half into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate. This lemon meringue pie recipe is perfect for any season. Turn the dough out onto the counter and divide it into 2 pieces. Scatter the flour mixture over the butter, add the egg, and process just until the dough forms a mass do not overmix. Place the butter in a food processor and process until smooth, about 15 seconds. Sift together the confectioners' sugar, flour, and salt into a bowl. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the top of the tart with the warm apricot glaze. If necessary, rewarm the apricot glaze over low heat or in the microwave. Arrange the slices around the edge of the tart with the cut sides out. If they are a real bastard, they'll knock right away, leaving the others stuck with scores in the twenties, which is a lot of beer to drink. ![]() The buzz factor is potentially high for this game because it is not out of the question for someone to have been dealt with three face cards and a two right off the bat. Which is hardly a penalty, when you consider that, if you accidentally replace a face card with say a ten, you're shit out of luck. Every extra time a player must check his face-down cards to see what he/she has, the penalty is a drink. Remember that the face-down cards can only be looked at once, at the beginning of the game. Regardless, whoever has the lowest score is the only one who does not have to drink. If the person who knocked does NOT have the lowest score, then it is said that he/she has been 'sent to the clubhouse', lowest score. If the person who knocked indeed has the lowest score, then everyone in the group must drink the difference between their score and the lowest score. Play then moves on to the next player.Īt any time during a player's turn, be the lowest. However, if the player chooses to replace a face-down card, the replacement card is placed face down in its place, putting the old card on the discard pile. 2 The game has little in common with the solitaire game of the same name. If he/she decides to replace a face-up card, the chosen card is put in its place, placing the old card on the discard pile. Golf (also known as Polish Polka, Polish Poker, Turtle, Hara Kiri and Crazy Nines 1) is a card game where players try to earn the lowest number of points (as in golf, the sport) over the course of nine deals (or 'holes'). However, if the card is of lower value than any of his/her existing cards, he/she can exchange the lower-valued card with it. If he/she chooses to discard it, he/she simply places it face up in a pile next to the deck and play continues to the next person. After seeing its value, he/she can decide to either discard it or exchange it for any of his/her existing cards. Also called Hara-Kiri, the game is usually played between two to four players with the objective of earning the lowest number of points throughout nine deals or holes. Player 1 picks up the top card from the remaining stack. 6-Card Golf is one of the most popular variations of the golf card game. Play then starts with the player directly to the right of the dealer. The remaining cards are placed, face down in the center of. Pick a dealer who removes Jokers and shuffles a standard deck of cards. For 2-4 player games, the object is to score the least number of points at the end of 9 game rounds. The players mentally add up their scores. The rules below are for 6-Card Golf, one of the many versions of the game. The object of the game is to get the lowest score, hence the name golf. Each player then places his/her cards in a 2x2 tableau, like so: (X=face down, O=face up) O O X XĮach player then takes a look at their two face down cards and places them back on the table, face down in either order. The dealer deals four cards to each player, the first two face down and the second two face up. The players sit in a circle, preferably at a table, each with a full cup of beer.

Perhaps nobody has come up with one and the ability to find them is what separates the highly intelligent from the super-intelligent. There remains a gap in the market for developing a method to aid a NI (natural intelligence, as opposed to a computer) in spotting the more esoteric patterns necessary for cracking the harder puzzles. That said, it is as good as any other Sudoku guide I have come across. There are many pages devoted to providing a supply of puzzles (which can easily be had from any daily newspaper) but some of those pages could have been better used for diagrams to illustrate the logic of solving. In my opinion this book misses a trick: mostly, the diagrams do not highlight cells of interest in the discussion so leave the reader to search for them at the same time as following the discussion - perhaps the author can do that with ease, but I can't and it makes for a hard study. I was looking forward to some tips about the practicalities of solving tougher Sudokus - my own logic techniques are very similar to those explained in this (and other) books, but I fall down on being able to spot the patterns amongst the clutter.
